They are often called man’s best friend. In total there are thought to be about 400 million of them
in the world. They are one of the most popular companions for people all over the world. In fact
they are so popular that nearly 1 million people plan to give them most of their savings when they
die.

There are also hundreds of different breeds or kinds of them. What animal am I talking about?
They are of course dogs.

As anyone who has had a dog will know, they are very clever animals. One study showed that a
border collie dog named Chaser could understand over 1,000 different words. For many families,
their pet dog is like another family member. A study showed that many dogs also have their own
chores to do around the house. This might be licking dishes clean after dinner or bringing the in
newspaper.
